What is baseball?
Baseball is a game played between two teams with 9 players each. There are four bases in the field and mostly four umpires supervise the major league games. Each team player needs to hit the ball with a bat to score points. Learn more about how to play the baseball:
Baseball is one of the most popular sports in the world, and there are thousands of players that were once like you-trying to learn how! This wonderful sport that is very rewarding to anyone who would like to learn!
The History about baseball
Baseball has started many debates since the game rose to prominence in the late 1800s. Among the most debated issues is the individual responsible for initially setting down the rules to the game. While Abner Doubleday was originally credited with the achievement (a fact that is still commonly believed), the first organized game of baseball was most likely led by Alexander Cartwright in 1845. Whatever its origins may be, baseball has since had a long and storied history.
Baseball team's history in United States of America
Major League Baseball:
The National League dates back to 1876, and others quickly attempted to profit from its early popularity and success by creating leagues of their own. The American Association was formed in 1881, followed by the Union Association in 1884 and the Players' League in 1890. All of these leagues eventually folded. It wasn't until American League Commissioner Bancroft Johnson declared his to be a "Major League" that the National League signed a 1903 partnership agreement with the A.L. Major League Baseball was eventually formed as two eight-team leagues.
The Dead Ball Era:
The early 20th century came to be known as the "Dead Ball Era" because of record lows in hits, runs and home runs. The Dead Ball Era ended with the emergence of Babe Ruth in 1919. Ruth set a Major League record with 29 home runs in 1919 and followed the performance with an astounding 54 in 1920, which was more than any other American League team hit (as a whole) that year. Ruth's dominance and bigger-than-life personality caused him to become a baseball legend.
Color Barrier:
The sport of baseball mirrored much of society by segregating black and white players in its early days. As a result, a number of Negro Leagues operated between 1920 and 1960. Many Negro League players have been inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, with Josh Gibson and Satchel Paige among the most well-known. on April 15th, 1947, Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier by playing for the Brooklyn Dodgers. He won the Rookie of the Year Award that year. Robinson's number 42 has been retired by Major League Baseball, and Jackie Robinson Day has been celebrated since 2004.
New York Yankees:
The New York Yankees are, by far, the most successful franchise in Major League Baseball history--their 27 World Championships dwarf the 10 won by the St. Louis Cardinals (as of May 2010). The Yankee dynasties were overwhelming during the middle of the 20th century--they won 16 championships between 1936 and 1962, led by the likes of Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Whitey Ford and Yogi Berra, whose 10 championships are the most by an individual player.
Steroids:
Baseball rose to prominence again in the late 1990s, when Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa began their historic chase of Roger Maris's record of 61 home runs in a season. As the number of home runs hit at this time rose at a stunning rate, accusations flew that players were using performance-enhancing drugs. Major League Baseball officially banned steroids in 2002. Since then, many star players, including McGwire and Yankee superstar Alex Rodriguez, have admitted to steroid use.
Steps to know the baseball field
Step 1. Know that the baseball field consists of four bases starting anti-clockwise
from the starting base. The starting base is called home plate. First,
second and third bases have an area of 15 square inches each.
Step 2. Note that the home plate consists of five sides.
Step 3. Understand that the four bases form a 'Diamond'. The length of the sides
of the square forming this Diamond is 90 feet.
Step 4. Remember that the baseball field consists of infield and outfield. The four
bases lie in infield. The outfield is between the first and third bases past
the four bases. The first and third bases lie on the foul lines which lie in outfield.
Steps to know position of the players
Step 1. Know that the players both from the batting and the pitching team are
assigned particular positions. The pitcher stands on the mound, the catcher
stands behind the batter, four infielders stand on the edge of the infield
and three fielders stand in the outfield.
Step 2. Note that only one person from the batting team is allowed to bat. The
batter starts hitting from the home plate. The other players from the
batting team stand on the three bases. They are known as base runners
until they reach home plate.
Steps to Play Baseball
Step 1. Know that baseball is played in nine innings. In each inning, one team has
a turn to bat and the other team pitches. The batting team tries to hit the
ball and score runs. on the other hand, the pitching team tries to make
the batting team miss the balls and get the players out.
Step 2. Remember that if three players of the batting team are out, the positions
of the teams will interchange, the pitching team will start batting and the
batting team will start pitching.
Step 3. Know that winner will be the team which after the nine innings makes the maximum runs.
If both the teams have same runs after 9 innings, they need to play more innings until one team wins.
Step 4. Know that in the beginning, the pitching is done by the home team and batting by the visiting team.
Step 5. Remember that good pitching is very important. The pitcher should throw
the ball towards the home plate carefully. The ball should be close to the
batter to hit or the umpire may call it a 'ball'. The batter can move to the
first base if four 'balls' are called.
Step 6. Know that the batter should try to hit more balls with his bat to score
runs. If he doesn't hit the ball, it is called 'Strike' by the umpire.
Step 7. Note that the 'catcher' standing behind the batter aims to catch the balls that are not hit by the batter.
The catcher and the pitcher are always in contact through body language.
Steps to make runs
Step 1. Note that to get runs; the batter must try to hit all balls thrown by the pitcher.
He must bat and then run to touch all the bases from first to the fourth.
Step 2. Know that the batter must try to get all the other players of his team to home plate.
Else, he can run all the bases himself. After a batter runs all previous bases and touches the home plate,
his team gets a home run. When the batter secures a home run, the batter and all the other runners
can touch all the bases and score runs.
Step 3. Remember that the batter should always try to hit the ball between the foul lines.
Doing this will prevent the pitcher from making anyone of the batting team out.
However, if the batter hits the ball out of the foul line, the umpire will call it a 'Foul ball'.
Step 4. Note that the pitcher should try the batter not to hit the ball. Pitchers canalso get runners out.
If they touch the batter with the ball before he reaches the first base, the batter gets out.
How to teach baseball:
When you're going to teach baseball you need to teach the fundamentals. The fundamentals start with the swing, fielding, pitching, and catching. When you're teaching the swing you need to keep your mechanics in order. You need to keep a level swing at all times, keep your bat shoulder high and swing level at the ball. Also, you must wait on the ball to get to the batter. You also need to field the ball doing things such as ground balls, short hop drills, and freehand drills will increase hand-eye coordination to make your player a better fielder. Catching is just a matter of practice and repetition. Practice and repetition comes through baseball practice and games and experience as a child or player gets older. Also, another thing to teach baseball you need to ensure that the good mechanics are being used to avoid injury to the players and to those that play the game around them. And this is how you teach baseball."
